APEX is a private sector-led business development engine established to promote sustainable growth in the APEX region of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, including all eight counties covered by Northspan’s Northland Connection program.
APEX’s 90+ investor-members represent many of the largest and most influential organizations with a vested interest in business attraction, expansion, and retention. APEX’s business and economic development efforts focus on industries including manufacturing, mining, the aviation sector, professional services, and next-generation forest products.
Since 2003, APEX has impacted over 4,340 jobs in the region, resulting in a regional payroll of over $177.9 million and contributing to over $24.5 million annually in state and local taxes.
To support regional business development, APEX helped found the Northland Housing Partnership (NHP) in 2023. This employer-led initiative supports workforce attraction and retention efforts by increasing the amount of market-rate housing available for employees through strategic investment.
APEX has been an integral partner for the Northland Connection program since its inception. Northland Connection’s property database and analysis provide direct support for APEX business recruitment and retention efforts, freeing APEX staff to market the region and engage directly with existing area businesses. These combined efforts set the stage for regional economic growth and prosperity for the Northland.
